How to Be More Authentic with Science: Psychology for Being Yourself ALL THE TIME
“Just be yourself.”
“Be authentic.”
“Try to be more genuine.”
But, really, what does authenticity mean? Do you have a small identity crisis whenever someone tells you to just be yourself? It’s the same problem people who want to seem genuine have. Is it possible to sell without feeling like a salesperson? Give an elevator pitch without pitching? Talk about yourself without sounding self-centered.
Call this the authenticity crisis: you’re on a tightrope between obscurity and relevance. And forever at risk for falling into the fiery flames of inauthenticity anytime.
Before we do anything it’s almost a habit to ask “Is it good enough? Is it interesting? Will people like this?” or “Is this too much? Is this a humble brag? Should I tone it down?”
